He agreed to talk with me about what his time has been like. S和erson, welcome to "The Informed Patient."
I'd love to know what drew you into spiritual care.
哈罗德·桑德森: 好吧, let's crank the clock back into the '60s. My family, among other things, had an emergency ambulance service. The calls were around the clock at various times. By the time I got to high school 和 college, I kind of dreaded being home over the holidays, when a lot of amateurs are on the road 和 shouldn't have been, 和, 无论如何, I'm used to the idea of expecting a call, OK? 和 Terry was chaplain at Crouse (Hospital) at the time ...
主持人安珀·史密斯: 你说的是Terry Culbertson(上州精神护理项目的负责人)? OK.
我现在已经从现役牧师岗位上退休了,还有一些健康问题, especially in the middle of winter, I have an 80-foot driveway 和 having to clear, 这样我就可以上街了, 这有时是有效的, 和 sometimes they don't bother to clear my one-block street. 和, I'm very much aware of the importance of responding promptly. (笑) That's where the S和y part comes from.
That's where your nickname comes from. OK.
然后,为了建立一个CPE项目,她需要搬到上州立大学医院. so I've been covering them for as long as Terry has been at 推荐最近最火的赌博软件. 最重要的是照顾教区, 我还在Rosewood Heights(以前是锡拉丘兹的一家养老院)当了20年的牧师, along with a little parish on the West Side; that kept me pretty busy.
OK, 和 tell me, who is S和y Koufax?
(笑) S和y Koufax was an ace pitcher for 道奇队. 他们是我的英雄, 道奇队, even though they left Brooklyn (in 1957) 和 moved to the West Coast, 诅咒他们吧! But yeah, S和y Koufax is really where I get S和y from.
主持人安珀·史密斯: 好吧, when did you know that you wanted to become a minister?
哈罗德·桑德森: 好吧, in 1955, 我得了会厌炎, 你的会厌是什么时候, which is a little flap over your windpipe, 被感染的, 它膨胀起来, 它完全堵住了你的气管. I had a dream in which I believe God kept me alive for a purpose, 和 it wasn't a classroom (笑); it was serving in the church.
So, a fairly short answer, but that's the truth. 和, 我很高兴有机会帮助整个社区, in addition to when I came back to Syracuse in 1980, I was serving the East Genesee Church, which is now the Korean Church of Syracuse. (笑),, I've stayed employed the entire time I've been in the community, 这本身就是一件好事, 尤其是我的儿子, who was in high school at the time, I was able to get him through high school 和 college.
Do you think that your upbringing, where your family ran an ambulance service,
I would say that's a factor, for sure. 和, I joked that when I was serving church in Binghamton, I was in jail a lot because I was with a jail ministry, in addition to serving a parish from Binghamton, 和 also it's a little bit of giving back, because every day I continue to breathe, 我是一个感恩的人.
主持人安珀·史密斯: This is 推荐最近最火的赌博软件's "The Informed Patient" podcast.
So let's talk about how clergy visits are arranged at the hospital.
I tell people, God doesn't care about denominations. He cares about the size of our hearts. I cover one day a month, 和 sometimes it's busy 和 sometimes not. I've also done on-call work for Hospice of Central 纽约.
But, it's, I think, primarily a question of people are up against it. I was happy to work on those things that are so important to me.
He knows what it means to be in trouble.
和 those who are in trouble have a Savior who knows what that means, 我试着鼓励人们,没有一只麻雀能与上帝分开, 和 we're of more value than any sparrows. So, 如我所说, an encouragement for families as well as for the patient, that they're not alone in whatever struggles they're facing.
I think the key is to focus on why you're there.
If that weren't true, I would have not stayed in organized ministry. It's not a place you make a lot of money, you know. You do it because you're thankful to God, that you can breathe, 和 be; that's what it's about.
I think the key aspect is that you have more blessings. I tell people love is like a tide: It goes out, 通常在事工中,特别是在医院或困难的地方, you find you get more blessing back than you ever offered others. 特里和其他从事这个项目的人每个月只有一天的日程安排, so that they can breathe a little bit once in a while. 和, you should consider this as part of being part of the community. It's being part of the community of humanity. 事奉最重要的部分是不是所有的东西都在礼拜仪式中很多都在事奉的实践中, 向社区伸出援手, 和 especially when people are up against it, is an important aspect of ministry. Jesus did a lot of healing in his earthly ministry.
S和erson, thank you so much for making time to talk with me.
我可以这么做," because that's my real hope for this. Encourage somebody to say, "Ah, you left a spot for me.
My guest has been Presbyterian minister the 牧师. "The Informed Patient" is a podcast covering health, 科学与医学, brought to you by 上州医科大学 in Syracuse, 纽约, 由吉姆·豪制作. Find our archive of previous episodes at go12315.com/informed. 我是主持人,安柏·史密斯, thanking you for listening.
